my microscopic lost season 5 predictions

  1. Daniel Faraday is basically taking over Jack’s leadership role.
  2. Locke who was supposed to lead the others will now have tunnel vision in getting off the island with little side projects trying to "help” the people he is supposed to lead.
  3. I think Ellie (the girl that took faraday to the bomb) is Penny’s mom
  4. I could see Charlie, Penny and Desmond’s son, actually being Charles Widmore in some odd time traveling twist.
  5. Charles Widmore is an ass… K, so technically not a prediction.
  6. Charles Windmore wanted to be the leader of the others, but the island chose Ben… which started their fierce rivalry.
  7. The Oceanic 6 aren’t getting back to the island until the very end of this season.
  8. Kate’s storyline continues to be annoying.
  9. When the Oceanic 6 do finally make it back to the island, the time traveling will stop, despite season long efforts of Faraday and company to fix it without them.

So yeah, not necessarily all predictions, but more thoughts and educated guesses.

it’s gonna be a long walk

I’m about to drop $800 in maintenance on my car. Two of the most expensive things that need to be done on it are because the people who worked on it over a year ago put in the wrong parts. So I need new spark plugs, a new Mass Airflow Sensor (MAF), a new Air Filter, and a few other items. Awesome.

After owning my car since August of 2001 I can say that I’ve been pretty happy with it. I hear all these horror stories about Jettas but I haven’t really had much trouble. Mostly just a sensor here, or a filter there. I just hit 100,000 miles on it, and it seems like I’ll have another 100K if I keep up the maintenance.

Major maintenance History

  • 2002 – Windows falling into door due to heat in Arizona and incorrect grade of plastic (it melted) for the heat. WARRANTY WORK
  • 2003 – 6 CD Changer functions poorly, fixed at Idaho Falls dealer. WARRANTY WORK
  • 2003 – Noticed Seat warmer broken in drivers seat, fixed in Idaho Falls. WARRANTY WORK
  • 2003 – Backed into a curb and caused muffler to fall off… had to get it re-welded.
  • 2007 – 80,000 checkup and misc. fixes. Mass Airflow Sensor replaced, timing belt replaced, etc..
  • 2008 – No check engine light
  • 2009 – 100,000 checkup + fix for check engine light. Vacuum hose, MAF, fuel filter, air filter (due to previous wrong install), fix driver side door latch, fix spark plugs (improper gap from previous install).

Who asked you?

Over at waferboy they’ve been profiling the tools that some technofiles are running. I thought I’d document the exact questions for myself out of curiosity.

So who are you and what do you do?

I’m Chris Millar, more or less a quality engineer for a printing company by day and a technology consultant by night. I’ve had many job titles over the years from graphic designer to network admin to prepress manager.

What hardware are you using to get your work done?

My primary machine is a newly purchased Lenovo T400 (which replaced a black Rev 1 Macbook). It’s got the balance between work and play all figured out. I can do some wannabe C# coding or some reporting but when I go home I can watch some IASiP or do some photo editing. My work computer is a Dual Core Pentium D… it’s all business. I have an Intel 17” iMac at home for presentations, random stuff I need a mac for, and it’s my no-fuss desktop that sits on top of a minimalistic desk that I designed and built. Lastly, I also have what I call the FrankenMac that’s a 1.7ghz G4 with a PC video card flashed for a Mac and a 500GB serial ata HD for storage and backup. The FrankenMac is my server that I can access from anywhere, which is great when I forget to transfer a file from home.

I also rock an iPhone 3G which I reluctantly purchased in late December to replace an iPhone 2G that got ran over a few times.

And what software?

I don’t have a main application that I spend more than 30% of my time in so I’m all over the map. I use Visual Studio 2008 for the .NET stuff. TextPad and Coda for all PHP. CSSEdit for all my hardcore style projects. I use OmniGraffle for all flow charting. I use Windows Live Writer for all blog posting and Wordpress as the CMS. NewsFire on the Mac and FeedDemon on the PC for all my news reading. The syncing issue used to bother me but NewsFire is too elegant to turn away from. I tie all my PIM up to the cloud via exchange. My GTD setup is a custom solution that I built using SharePoint and Outlook. I just recently (and reluctantly) switched to Lightroom for all my photo managing. I use CS4 a ton for everything from SOPs to presentations to the design work that crops up from time to time. For general web browsing I use Camino on the mac and Firefox (w/ glasser, no menubar, adblock) on the PC. I run Vista Ultimate and Business on my PCs and run Snow Leopard and Leopard on my home machines. I use Twittle, Twittelator, and Twitterific for twitter happenings.

What would be your perfect, ultimate setup?

I’d probably just settle for a Quad Core Windows machine at work, a faster internet connection at home, a Mac Pro at home, and a blu-ray player to watch movies… A fanless media center that can push 1080p and record HD would be nice too.

Wasatch Winterfest

winterfest-sm While the brewery kit sits in the spare bedroom waiting to be used I thought I would talk about a beer that took me by surprise.

The wasatch winterfest is an interesting beer. It’s a 7.1% American/Amber style Ale that doesn’t necessarily taste like it’s 7.1%. I’ve been reluctant to try it for the longest time due half in part to my dramatically cut back drinking habits, and also that larger percentage. I feel like Wasatch and Squatters don’t do a great job at hiding their high-points with normal "non-utah" beers. The new White Label and their Double Bock Devastator tend to float with what I call the belguim candy flavor. It’s this syrupy after taste that stings the palette.

This syrupy over-alcoholed taste could come from the Utah legacy of 3.2% more than anything else. Brewers here have been so concerned about making a 3.2 beer taste like a 4.9 etc. beer that now with no limitations they’ve gone overboard in the taste factor.

Back to the beer itself. The Winterfest shines in that it doesn’t carry on this legacy. It’s styled to be a slightly hoppier version of an amber, so it’s rich and fruity yet doesn’t come off with that previously mentioned candy flavor. This is of course my non-professional point of view on beer tasting.

Apple will be fine. Everyone needs to calm down. I don’t think Steve will survive this, and I really hope I’m wrong, but Apple will still remain intact. The Apple management team is basically jobs in multiple person form…

Phil Schiller – The clueless product guy that thinks everyone is going to love something as much as he does… whether or not they really do.

Johnny Ive – The design guy. He shares Job’s minimalist design aesthetic to his core and maybe even more than jobs.

Tim Cook – The relentless hard working businessman. He is ruthless while being a numbers and ops guy to boot.

Scott Forstall – Also known as the iPhone guy. He has the vision into the future that Jobs also has.
